In the field of dermatology, the laser technique is a groundbreaking innovation. Dermatologists are rapidly adopting it into their standard skin and hair care routines as it gains popularity. Dermatologists recognized the need for a long-term, practical solution to deal with body hair. Shaving one's entire body is a serious, time-consuming task! Who has the time and patience to thoroughly wax or shave each body part, curve, and area one after the other? We know from experience that getting hair-free skin is a demanding task. This is where laser hair removal comes into the picture. Laser hair removal treatment is an excellent alternative to messy and repetitive hair removal methods. This is a popular procedure that involves targeting a high-intensity laser beam over the skin's hair follicles to permanently eliminate or reduce unwanted body hair. This method, which is secure, painless, practical, and long-lasting, will give one freedom from undesired hair growth for a very long time!

What to Expect from the Laser Hair Removal Treatment?

Firstly, the patient must consult the dermatologist and get themselves physically tested. It is important to provide a medical history to avoid complications. Also, one must tell if the person is on antibiotics, as it may sometimes lead to hyperpigmentation.

Pre-Procedure Guidelines

  • Avoid the sun or other tanning agents for at least two weeks. This is important because exposure to tanning components can overwhelm the treatment.
  • Heavy makeup and perfumes are strictly prohibited, as they may irritate the skin or leave residual irritants behind. Even after the treatment, patients are advised to use them once the recovery time has passed.
  • One should avoid getting waxed, bleached, dyed, or threaded before the treatment.
  • If a tattoo is close to the targeted skin area, it should be covered with tape because the pigments used in dark tattoos cause them to absorb more laser heat.
  • The patient is encouraged to shave before the treatment, as the shaved tip of the hair becomes the best spot for heating the area way faster.

During the Procedure

  • The experts provide protective eye gear to the patient to prevent any chance of them being exposed to the laser light.
  • The dermatologist uses handheld devices on the skin. Depending on the type of laser used, a cooling agent is also applied to the skin. The gel prevents any side effects that may follow after the procedure.
  • The doctors then activate the laser, and the beam passes through the skin to the follicles. The intensive light heats the hair follicles and inhibits their growth.
  • The patient may feel a slight discomfort, like a warm pinprick and a cooling sensation from the cooling gel.
  • The time consumed depends on the part being lasered: small areas like the upper lips will take less time, whereas larger areas like the entire back will take longer.

Post Procedure Guidelines

  • The patient may find swelling and redness on their skin for a few hours post-treatment.
  • One can apply ice to the treated area to reduce discomfort.
  • If there is a skin reaction, consult the doctor immediately; they will recommend medication to elevate the reaction.
