According to statistics, as of 2015, there were 17 Chinese medicine universities and 25 independent Chinese medicine colleges across the country, and more than 200 western or non-medical universities offered Chinese medicine courses, with an enrollment of 752,000 students. In the process of implementing the TCM inheritance and innovation talent training plan, efforts have been made to preserve and disseminate the academic ideas and practical experience of the fifth batch of outstanding TCM experts. 

By 2015, 1,016 studios had been established to promote their expertise; 200 studios have been established to transfer the expertise of outstanding TCM experts at the grassroots level; Sixty-four studios have been established to promote various TCM schools.

The third way to learn acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine is to participate in a program organized by the competent authorities with the aim of training doctors serving in rural areas, but without the qualification of assistant doctors or doctors. This type of doctor can be traced back to China in the middle of the last century, when underdeveloped China did not have enough medical resources to allocate to the countryside, thus giving rise to a special group of doctors without licensed medical practitioners, who were formerly known as "barefoot doctors". 

However, their title was changed to "Village Doctor" in 1985, and in 2004 the Regulations on the Management of Rural Doctors were enacted to regulate the performance of rural doctors. If they complete the training program, they may receive a rural doctor certificate even though they do not qualify as an assistant physician or a practicing physician. What they need to do is to attend the training held by the competent authorities every two years and pass the training examination. It is worth noting that from the date of promulgation of the Regulations on the Management of Rural Doctors, new rural doctors will no longer be allowed to practice in rural areas.
